I began BIOPHILIA several years ago and I continue to return to it.
The title comes from the concept of biophilia. Erich Fromm first used the term to describe a love of life and everything that is alive. It was later developed by biologist Edward O. Wilson as the natural human need to connect with nature and other living beings. For me, biophilia is more than a simple love of nature. It is the feeling that humans, animals, plants and landscapes all belong to the same living system.
Each chapter begins with something I have encountered: a landscape, an animal, a body, a particular atmosphere or a change in light. The chapters were created at different moments, but they are all part of the same continuing research.
My background in painting influences the way I see and photograph nature. I am interested in colour, light, atmosphere and the emotions they can create. My connection with Impressionism comes from its attention to changing light and perception.I want the photograph to express the sensation of being there.
In BIOPHILIA, nature is not a background and animals are not decorative elements. The human body is part of the environment, not separate from it. The project remains open and continues to grow as my relationship with the living world changes over time.
